Similar to his use of contrast in 14. Summer Palace, here Mackintosh juxtaposes the minimalist, clean white faces of le Fort Maillert with its rocky, grey foundations beneath.
The rock face is in fact drawn from a lower vantage point, but forms a stronger foil for the Fort than the vegetation of Fort Mailly, as seen from a spot directly opposite.
